Our personal brand is not only perceived by the way we interact with people in person. In modern day we must have a holistic approach to defining our personal and professional brand. This post will walk you through the top 5 things to keep in mind when posting in your online profiles.
- Do not post anything you don’t want your boss or clients to see.
I cannot stress this enough. Many people who are entering the workforce often miss this. Specially if you are going into the field or subfields of marketing communications, your online presence should not only be extremely well defined but also free of any reasons for someone see you in a bad light.
- Let people know the things that you value.
Ask yourself what are the things you value the most. Is it your family? Let people know that. Is it your love for your job? Show the aspects of your job that are your favorite. This allows for your network of friends, family and other professionals to get to know you.
Keep in mind, the topics or values you showcase will vary depending on the platform you are using.
- Keep your political views to yourself.
There are many people who will post their views. If you are thinking about posting something political STOP.
Let’s think about the meaning of the word “politics”. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as:
“the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power.”
I would like to highlight the terms “debate or conflict among individuals or parties”. Unless you are deciding your career will be going into government public affairs, I suggest you steer away from government debate or conflict. This will close more doors than open them.
- Interact your connections/friends/followers.
You created an online profile for a reason, right? Interact with the people who want to be a part of your network, be social! There are many people who think that just by having a profile and listening to what is happening is enough. Here are some news, it’s not. Do not be afraid to show your support for your friend’s promotion by liking and yes, even sharing their good news with your connections. These are people you connected with because one way or another you know them. Like your friend’s photo on Instagram, do not be afraid to utilize those functions because the likes are unlimited!
Also, create content. It is great to like/comment/share someone’s post/news, but also take the time to create content that fits your brand. Keep in mind, this will depend on the brand aspect of your brand you are trying to push. As a professional communicator you should know how to do this.
- Have fun. This tip is tied to #4. I know you are a fun person who people love and do not be afraid to show that. However, keep in mind the tips above this one.
